I filed a federal petition requesting the Government of Canada to declare Pete Hoekstra persona non grata

Last night I filed a federal e-petition e-7531 with the House of Commons. Let me tell you the reason, and why my goal is for 100,000 Canadians to sign it.

Who is Pete Hoekstra?

Hoekstra is a former Michigan congressman and longtime Republican operative appointed by Donald Trump as U.S. Ambassador to Canada in 2025. This is actually his second ambassadorial appointment, as he previously served as ambassador to the Netherlands, where he also managed to embarrass himself internationally.

Within months of his arrival to Canada, he was publicly complaining that Canadians weren’t enthusiastic enough about America, calling the 2025 federal election campaign “anti-American,” and describing Trump’s repeated threats to annex Canada as a “term of endearment.” When Finance Minister Francois-Phillippe Champagne pushed back on the negative impacts of the U.S. tariffs on Canadian workers, Hoekstra called it “a dangerous place to go.”

Hoekstra’s Conduct That’s Pissing Canadians Off

Under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, ambassadors are expected to respect the laws of the receiving state and not interfere in its internal affairs. Hoekstra seems to think these are more along the lines of suggestions, rather than obligations.

He has accused Canada of interfering in U.S. domestic politics over Ontario’s anti-tariff ad campaign - an ad that features Ronald Reagan’s own words - while at the same time, making repeated interventions in Canadian political discourse. He lectured Canadians about anti-Americanism while representing the same administration that is actively threatening our sovereignty.

As Canadian novelist and host of the Gloves Off podcast Stephen Marche put it, Hoekstra “is the person you send to a country to alienate it. He is a person who obviously has no interest in maintaining really decent U.S.-Canadian relations.”

The Alberta Data Breach, and Hoekstra’s Connection

PressProgress did some investigative reporting the other day which revealed that a Michigan-based voter identification app previously promoted by Hoekstra was used by the Centurion Project, an Alberta separatist group, to identify and track supporters of a potential independence referendum. Hoekstra claims that he was “not aware” of the connection, despite the app’s founder being a direct associate of his - both are listed as directors of the same Michigan environmental group.

Meanwhile, the Alberta Prosperity Project met with U.S. State Department officials three times between April 2025 and January 2026 to discuss the logistics of Alberta separating from Canada. Hoekstra told NBC news that he had “no info” about those meetings.

My opinion is that he is either lying, or incompetent - which neither is acceptable of a diplomat.

This is quite obviously part of the plan, there’s a pattern here. The Trump administration has made no secret of its interest in weakening Canada. Whether it be through tariffs, annexation rhetoric, and likely from quietly encouraging the forces that would rather tear this country apart from the inside.

My Reason for Filing the Petition

I’m an Albertan, and I’ve witnessed American interests shape this province’s political and economic landscape for my entire adult life. I know what it looks like when outside forces exploit Alberta’s grievances for their own gain - and I can tell you that’s exactly what’s happening right now.

But let’s be honest, this isn’t just an Alberta story - this is a Canadian sovereignty story. Hoekstra’s behaviour affects every single province and every single Canadian who believes this country deserves a diplomatic relationship that is built on mutual respect rather than downright intimidation.

The Goal: 100,000 Signatures

I’m absolutely not interested in symbolic gestures, I want 100,000 Canadian signatures on this petition.

That number would make it impossible for Parliament to look away, it would force media coverage, and it would put the Carney government on record in a way that a polite diplomatic note could never do. The largest e-petition in Canadian history gathered around 350,000 signatures, so I know Canadians will show up when it matters the most. And to me, well… I think this matters.
